The age-old saying has always been “a body in motion, stays in motion”. That goes the same for people with CP. Keeping your body in motion, will only help your body stay limber and can keep it from becoming “locked up.”

Always keep in mind that everybody’s case is different. But in most cases doctors and other specialists will always recommend to keep moving as it will help you keep as much of your mobility as long as possible. These activities don’t have to be boring, there’s a lot of fun things that will keep you mobile and healthy!

Pool games (Hydrotherapy)

Being in the pool is a perfect solution! The reason the water is the best way to play for people that have CP is because movement in water will put less stress on your joints. Putting less stress on your joints is very important when you have CP. Plus, with the decreased amount of stress on your joints, you will be able to perform a lot of movements that you wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

I highly recommend adding this into your routine as it allows you to work and strengthen your muscles without adding any joint pressure.

Painting

Painting is a great way to help people with CP or other disabilities to strengthen and work the fine motor muscles. These are very important muscles to work, as working on these will help you keep your fine motor skills strong for as long as possible.

Adventure outside

At times you can feel stuck or confined to the same space. This is true of all people, not just those with CP. In any scenario, it is important to change your scenery every now and then. In addition, it is a great way to remain active in a fun, interesting way.

Be sure to ask your doctor on how long you should be exercising for. Make sure to keep that in mind and to be accompanied by another person when neccassary for safety reasons.

Technology

Technology is always a good way to keep the mind engaged. If you have to be confined to one place, technology is a perfect to pass the time. Things like iPads, laptops, or even kindles, and games that engage your mind is a perfect way to keep your mind sharp and very engaged!

Reading

Again, this a great way to keep yourself engaged and learning. For the times you can’t be mobile, this is a perfect way to keep you from feeling down.

Living with Cerebral Palsy doesn’t have to define you, making sure you live a healthy, active life will ensure you live your life to the best of your ability.
